The Community Idea Stations (CIS) in Richmond will be presented a certificate this evening, announcing their selection as the FBI Richmond Division’s 2010 Director’s Community Leadership Award (DCLA) recipient.

Since 1990, the prestigious DCLA has been publicly awarded to individuals or organizations that make extraordinary contributions to crime and violence prevention and education initiatives within their community.

Several months ago, the CIS and the Richmond Division of the FBI began working on a collaborative effort to incorporate the existing FBI Safe On-line Surfing (FBI-SOS) program into Virginia’s Internet Safety Initiatives. Through continued contact and support, the CIS was able to assist in developing a strategy to promote the FBI-SOS program in Central Virginia, worked to create a concise one-page FBI-SOS handout for school administrators, and has pledged to promote the FBI-SOS program in presentations conducted by CIS personnel and through radio and television marketing.

The FBI-SOS program addresses most of Virginia’s Computer Technology Standards of Learning requirements, and the CIS was instrumental in sharing this information with Education Departments across the Commonwealth, with an eye towards raising public awareness of cyber crime and internet safety for children.

The CIS, comprised of three public television stations and a public radio station with an audience of upwards of 400,000 listeners, has shown such dedication in supporting, promoting and showcasing community assets that a partnership with them on this endeavor was flawless.

Any media interested in attending may do so, arriving at CIS, 23 Sesame Street, no later than 6:00 p.m.
